LOCATION: Center for Environmental Health, Bureau of Toxic Substances Assessment (BTSA) Corning Tower ' Albany, NY
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Grade 14 - Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health or Science; Toxicology, Pharmacology or another closely related field and at least one year of applied experience in an area related to human health risk assessment. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience. Grade 18 - Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health or Science, Toxicology, Pharmacology or another closely related field and at least two years of applied experience in an area related to human health risk assessment or a Master‘s degree in the above fields and one year of applied experience in an area related to human health risk assessment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred candidate will have demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and interpret scientific studies and data; experience in conducting multi-media human health risk assessments; and knowledge of pesticides and other environmental contaminants and their public health implications. Preference will be given to candidates with excellent written and oral communication skills for both technical and general audiences; strong data management and analysis skills; good organizational skills; and experience with PC software.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will assist in evaluating potential public health impacts of chemicals present in air, water, soil. food and consumer products using qualitative and quantitative risk assessment concepts and recommending approaches to reduce risk and will be responsible for developing or contributing to a variety of written reports describing the risk analyses in a timely manner, and will respond to pubic inquiries. in addition, the incumbent will assist in the evaluation of scientific data on human health risks based on toxicological effects and may assist in developing and implementing a program on sustainable public health practices that reduce risks from environmental hazards in the built environment (e.g.. smart growth and climate adaptation practices, and those consistent with the DOH Prevention Agenda priority to ‘Promote a Healthy and Safe Environment),
