JOB POSITION: Short-term Data Analyst/Epidemiologist Position

Job Description:
The Occupational Health & Injury Surveillance/Louisiana (LOHIS) Program is a statewide, CDC/NIOSH-funded program housed in downtown New Orleans. LOHIS is the primary state program for conducting occupational health surveillance. The program compiles, analyzes, and interprets occupational health surveillance data from multiple data sources in order to identify trends, high risk occupations and industries. LOHIS and the Office of Workers Compensation Administration (OWCA) have recently engaged in a pilot project to evaluate the use of workers’ compensation claims data for longitudinal tracking of occupational injuries and illnesses impacting Louisiana’s workforce. With limited exceptions, Louisiana employers are required to have workers’ compensation (WC) insurance or be self-insured; additionally, WC insurance carriers are required to electronically submit claim data to the OWCA. These claims data contain detailed information about the work-related injury or illness such as the nature of the injury/disorder, part-of-body, event or exposure, industry sector, and occupation. A Data Analyst is needed to assist with the WC data pilot project.

Responsibilities:
· Develop and implement system for data QA/QC
· Identify common or repeated data errors and provide feedback on steps to improve data quality
· Calculate rates by numerous fields including: demographics, industry, size of employer, part of body, nature, and cause
· Establish method for linking numerator (claims data) with various denominators (employment counts) to calculate industry specific rates
· Prepare written reports of findings

Requirements:
· Ability to manage large amounts of data
· Proven working experience as a data analyst
· Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data with attention to detail and accuracy
· Adept at queries, report writing and data visualization
· Proficiency in SAS, SPSS or other data analytic programs

Salary is dependent on education and experience.
Position available November 2015 through May 2016.
The position is located at Benson Tower, 1450 Poydras Street, New Orleans. Occasional travel to Baton Rouge is required.
