Project Coordinator - Epidemiologist

Major Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for providing a wide range of epidemiologic assistance to projects of the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI), a division of the Seattle Indian Health Board and external stakeholders. This work includes core epidemiologic functions such as conducting disease surveillance, primary data collection, data analysis, and interpreting and presenting health data. The Epidemiologist Project Coordinator reports to the UIHI Associate Director and receives technical guidance and oversight from the Scientific Director. This position aids in the monitoring of health status and its correlates, identifying disease trends, and providing data and technical assistance to promote and protect the health of urban American Indian/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs).
Key Job Duties:
-Analyze, interpret, and present health data, including data from national and local surveillance systems, surveys, and clinical data from the network of Urban Indian Health Organizations (UIHOs).
-Identify, obtain, and evaluate new data sources for use to assess the health status of urban AI/ANs.
-Support the Scientific Director in the maintenance of surveillance datasets used to monitor the health of urban AI/ANs.
-Independently design and conduct descriptive and advanced analyses.
-Provide epidemiological consultation and technical assistance to various public, private, and nonprofit health national, state, and local agencies and organizations, with a focus on UIHOs and AI/AN-serving organizations.
-Prepare responses to requests for data and information.
-Effectively translate and disseminate findings to diverse audiences, including developing reports, manuscripts, and data briefs, and making oral presentations.
-Participate in writing grants and other funding proposals.
-Update datasets used at UIHI, including editing code for data preparation, requesting data from national agencies, consulting with biostatisticians, and writing procedures around staff data usage.
-Develop and conduct quality control/quality improvement processes to improve the quality of data disseminated.
-Develop project plans, timelines, and process reports, and manage project expenses.
-Coordinate work done by project team, provide leadership and technical guidance to project staff, and assign work to other project staff.
Required Qualifications:
Education:Graduate degree in public health or epidemiology.
Experience:Two to three years of experience in an applied epidemiology or research setting. Applicants must demonstrate experience performing both analytical and project management work. Experience working with AI/AN populations preferred.
Skills/Knowledge:
-Familiarity with health and social issues facing AI/ANs and a desire to promote the delivery of appropriate health services to this population.
-Intermediate statistical and analytic skills and knowledge of research methods.
-Experience using standard statistical computer software, preferably Stata.
-Experience preparing data for analysis and conducting data analyses.
-Training in epidemiological and biostatistical principles and methods.
-Experience managing complex projects.
-Familiarity with spreadsheets and database systems.
-Knowledge of applied research methods and techniques.
-Familiarity with national, state, and local surveillance data and/or surveys.
-Knowledge of processes involved in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and/or services.
-Ability to communicate medical, statistical, and public health concepts to technical and community audiences.
-Excellent writing, speaking ability, and strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to explain methodology and findings in lay terms.
-Preferred subject matter expertise in behavioral health and or diabetes and/or HIV.
Ability to:
-Coordinate multiple complex projects effectively.
-Work independently and in teams to meet project deadlines.
-Exercise initiative and judgment to accomplish assigned tasks.
-Proficient use of software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, and statistical analysis software (e.g. Stat, R, SAS, SPSS).
-Write and prepare reports, briefs, and other dissemination materials.
-Effectively present information to a variety of scientific and community audiences.
