Position Description:
The Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is involved in advanced analytics in support of conceptualization, design, and evaluation of BCBSM clinical programs, such as the largest Patient-Centered-Medical Home Initiative in the nation, numerous pay-for- performance initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Possess and maintain knowledge of complex epidemiologic and surveillance methods, knowledge of current concepts of population health manage, program evaluation and needs assessment.
2. Possess and maintain an extensive comprehensive knowledge of health insurance and health care industry in general and specifics about BCBSM business, products and programs.
3. Design and implement epidemiologic studies to understand disease burden in BCBSM ensured population, and health care services being utilized for diseases diagnosis and treatment. Identify opportunities for clinical programs, assists in the planning and implementation of clinical programs to prevent and control diseases, and to improve quality and efficiency of care delivered to BCBSM ensured population. Design and implement epidemiologic studies to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical programs.
4. Prepares presentations and technical reports in a clear and concise manner to communicate findings from epidemiologic studies to management, providers and other interested parties. Disseminate research results through presentations to scientific and professional groups and through publications in scientific and professional journals.
5. Provides consultation to Michigan providers, physician organizations and other- interested groups.
The Health Care Epidemiologist position has two levels which are distinguished by the depth and breadth of accountability, the expertise required to perform assigned duties and the responsibility assigned for the leadership of others
Sr. Health Care Epidemiologist also has responsibilities in
1. Monitor/mentor multiple projects simultaneously by ensuring appropriate epidemiologic study designs and statistic methods are adopted. Drive the continuous method improvement in department analytic work.
2. Identify and resolve challenges in order to fulfill key corporate objectives and respond to the demand of change management and initiate actions needed to plan, organize and control team activities.
3. Provide expertise and guidance to unit and corporate staff as required.
4. Acts as liaison between corporate business areas and participates in group or committee discussions.
Qualifications: Master Degree in Public health, Epidemiology, Health Administration, or other related field is required. Doctoral degrees (PhD or Dr.PH) in related field(s) preferred for Sr. position.
EXPERIENCE 1. Two (2) or more years related experience for Health Care Epidemiologist. Six (6) or more years related experience for Sr. Health Care Epidemiologist. 2. Excellent analytical, planning, problem solving, verbal and written skills to communicate complex ideas. 3. Excellent knowledge and use of existing software packages (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.). 4. Strong working knowledge of data languages such as SAS or SQL. 5. Ability to work independently, within a team environment and communicate effectively with employees at all levels. 6. Other related skills and/or abilities may be required to perform this job.
DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS 1. Strong analytic skills (i.e. statistical methods, business process metrics, outcomes measurement, process modeling, quality assessment, etc). 2. Experience analyzing large volumes of data. 3. Statistical software skills (SAS preferred). 4. Solid working knowledge of reporting tools and software: Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word and Visio.
DEPARTMENT PREFERENCES 1. Experience analyzing complex integrated health care data including membership, professional and facility claims, lab and pharmacy data 2. Strong analytic and writing skills.
